Slow COMT: Nutrition Support for Mood, Stress, and Estrogen Metabolism

Feeling tired but unable to switch your brain off? If you’re exploring the COMT gene, anxiety, depression, or hormone metabolism, understanding how this pathway works can help you ask better questions about your nutritional needs.

What Does the COMT Gene Do?

COMT provides instructions for an enzyme that helps break down dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. These chemicals influence motivation, attention, alertness, and your stress response.

The double-copy Met/Met variant—often called slow COMT—generally produces lower enzyme activity. Your symptoms also depend on other genes, sleep, stress, and overall health.

COMT also processes catechol estrogens, specific estrogen breakdown products. This connects COMT with estrogen metabolism, although a genetic result alone cannot establish a hormone imbalance.

Nutrients That Support COMT and Methylation

COMT requires magnesium and SAM, a molecule that supplies methyl groups. Folate and vitamin B12 support the wider methylation pathway that produces these methyl donors.

Build meals around:

  • Magnesium: pumpkin seeds, almonds, beans, and leafy greens.

  • Folate: lentils, asparagus, beans, and leafy greens.

  • Vitamin B12: organ meats, especially liver, red meat, fish, and eggs.

These are practical nutrition priorities, not a universal supplement prescription. Reviewing food intake and checking suspected deficiencies helps make support more personal.

Practical Support for Stress and Mood

Prioritize consistent sleep, regular meals, movement, and daily time to unwind. If caffeine increases anxiety or interferes with sleep, consider reducing it.

For depression or persistent anxiety, nutrition support belongs alongside appropriate mental-health care. COMT testing provides context rather than a diagnosis.
